Ms. Payel Bhattacharya

Miss Payel Bhattacharya, suffers from a very rare condition called von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL). She comes from a middle-class background in India, and her father, a heart patient himself, is retired. The family lives on his meager pension. According to doctors, Payel requires treatment as early as possible, because the haemangiomas are spreading fast, and soon may become fatal. The treatment is expensive, and may require $62500 (i.e.)Indian Rs 2,500,000 or more.

Ms. Payel Bhattacharya

Payel, in her own words:

I'm optimistic and have taken up my life as a challenge, after all what is life, it is a challenge and we should meet it and not loose hope and sit depressed. I hope to start my graduation all over again, once I get well and believe there is no age for completing studies and if due to certain circumstances one can't complete studies, one can start all over again once the circumstances improve. There is no end to learning and it is up to us to gain as much knowledge as possible and utilize the knowledge and every moment of our life and in the process if possible contribute something to this Wonderful World of which we are but an infinitesimally small part. Since we have been granted only a single lifetime, we should utilize every moment of it.

Please visit Ms. Bhattacharya at her website, and help her in anyway that you can.

  1. I don't know how familiar you are with the Indian reality of today. The costs of liver transplant are horrendous by any standards. In a less-than-benevolent and suspicious society, it is really hard for an individual to get enough funds for a transplant, and its post-operative (lifelong) medical costs. If she is lucky, a government or big philanthropist may bail her out, but the chances of getting enough donations from individuals is remote, in my experience and opinion.
I see this, incidentally, on a daily basis, with people unable to bear the costs of treatment even in the charitable hospital I work in.
Generous of you to post about her....
