Eloi and Morlocks

Evolutionary psychologist, Dr. Oliver Curry, has a couple of predictions for the evolution of human specis. In the short term — the next 1000 years — Dr. Curry predicts that 6-7 feet tall humans will be the standard. Men will have "symmetrical facial features, look athletic, and have squarer jaws, deeper voices and bigger penises", and women will have "lighter, smooth, hairless skin, large clear eyes, pert breasts, glossy hair, and even features." Inter-racial breeding will ensure few, if any, racial differences, and everyone will be "coffee colored". Coffee-Latté, I presume. In short, it'll be the socialists' genetic nirvana!

In the long term (much further than 10000 years into the future), though, it'll be the capitalists' paradise. The twin forces of technology dependence and sexual selection will lead to "two sub-species, "gracile" and "robust" humans similar to the Eloi and Morlocks foretold by HG Wells in his 1895 novel The Time Machine", contends Dr. Curry. A genetic upper class of "tall, slim, healthy, attractive, intelligent, and creative" humans and a lower class of "dim-witted, ugly, squat goblin-like creatures" will popoulate our blue planet, and a few others, perhaps.

I should have expected that, knowing Dr. Curry is a member of Darwin@LSE. Just kidding. Well, and then what? A Morlockian Revolution?

  1. Kurzweil's book The age of spiritual machines has some provocative takes on human evolution. In fact, per that book, evolution in 21st century will cease to be a purely 'human' phenomenon as we understand human today.

The one interesting thing I noticed about the evolution-predictions in your post is the height. That phenomenon is so noticeable even between generations.

Inter-racial breeding is another interesting prediction. It seems a trifle utopian given the the current state of affairs. But well, the other way of looking at it is an increase in order & symmetry & I think that is pretty much at par with the evolutionary history of the planet as a whole.

    Very interesting pieces of information.

If only we will let our species exist and evolve to all this what with everyone wanting nuclear weapons!
